Our new topic this term is called ‘Once upon a time’; we have been learning about traditional tales and nursery rhymes. Hippo class have really enjoyed facing some challenges and learning about how to fix items together using a range of materials. One of Max’s favourite activities was building houses out of different materials for the 3 Little Pigs and seeing which houses would blow down using the hair dryer as the big bad wolf! Freya was able to build a bridge out of Duplo for the 3 Billy Goats Gruff to cross to get to the fresh green grass without being eaten by the troll.
We have enjoyed buying the ingredients to make current buns whilst learning the song ‘5 Current Buns.’ We enjoyed mixing the ingredients together to make the buns and some of us even ate them once they’d been cooked; they were delicious!
We have all enjoyed going horse riding and gained lots of confidence in new environments when sitting on the horse and learning to ride. For most of us it was our very first-time horse riding! We even learnt to care for the horses by brushing them too!
Hippo class have been incredibly busy this autumn term. We have thoroughly enjoyed learning about what our bodies can do in our topic ‘Head, shoulders, knees and toes’. We had lots of fun using our senses to smell and taste new foods, creating collage faces and following a circuit of footprints. We have particularly enjoyed using paint to create different pictures using our hand and fingers to print with. We even developed our independent self-care skills and learnt to brush our own teeth. Some of us weren’t keen on the taste of toothpaste though!
We have all been working really hard on our communication skills and have learnt to ask for help, to go to the toilet and for our favourite toys from the cupboard. We have even learnt how many pieces of banana we would like for snack! We have been learning lots of new vocabulary as we match and read symbols and words. In maths we have been learning to recognise numerals, count out quantities and place objects into containers. We have all learnt our colours and some of us have also learnt the days of the week.
We have enjoyed experiencing new activities with our friends when going to the park and rock climbing. Most of us had never been rock climbing before but we have developed our confidence week by week and learnt to climb the wall and rescue the soft animals! Some of us gained the confidence to climb right to the very top!
We ended the term with a very busy December making salt dough decorations, Christingles and Christmas cards. Hippo’s were amazing in the Christmas show as they arrived on a sleigh to Southsea pier, played games at the arcade whilst fishing for presents on the end of the pier before finishing with a fabulous party at the Gaiety Bar!
We have had an incredible first term at Cliffdale and are looking forward to reading lots of stories in our new topic next term ‘Once upon a time.’
