In assembly we celebrated Chinese New Year ready for 25th January. As it is ‘The Year of the Rat’, everyone had a go at signing ‘rat’. Some children impressed us by saying ‘Kung Hei Fat Choy’, meaning ‘Happy New Year’ in Chinese.
The celebrations began with Annie and Freya dressing up in traditional Chinese dresses – they looked very smart and were very proud to be wearing them. Lots of children had made a lantern to bring to assembly and took part in our lantern parade. We were especially pleased to see Blue Class from our Early Years department joining in – in only their second assembly!
Savanna, Kimmie, Keeleigh and Levi performed on the Taiko drums. We were amazed by their energy, concentration and how well they kept the rhythm.
Children from Zebra, Gorilla and Crocodile classes helped us create three long Chinese dragons. They managed to stay together during a brilliant dance which the choir had practised a special song for. Children in the choir also played instruments, such as hand bells, cymbals and gongs to add to the ensemble. Even chop sticks were used to tap along to the beat.
We finished our assembly with everyone joining in and celebrating with a Chinese New Year dance….‘Kung Hei Fat Choy’ everybody!
